VOLPATOHATZ was commissioned to design the new interiors of an existing four-storey house in central Basel. The house, which dates back to 1472, is situated right on the promenade along the river Rhine. With both external facades protected by heritage conservation laws, major design changes to the interiors were possible with some challenging structural interventions such as a new staircase, a person lift, new heating and electrical system including KNX. Major changes to the structure were required on the ground floor such as adjusting level changes and a new core with lift and stairs which helped stiffen the house for earthquake requirements. The open plan lobby also provided direct access to the plant room, garage, gym, toilet and small office facing the Rhine. The first floor includes a new en-suite with walk-in-robe accessible from the main bedroom, a guest bedroom and guest bathroom and a study. The second level has a separate but interconnected dining and kitchen area, a bedroom with en-suite, guest bathroom and study. An open planned living area, with exposed timber ceiling structure, is located on the third level. The living area has large glass doors towards the terrace with views towards the Rhine. New floor heating and all perimeter walls required thermal and noise insulation. All windows were replaced to match existing are to Minergie requirements with triple glazing. External walls are repainted to heritage colours and the roof was completely restored. The entire house meets the requirements of the ‘Swiss Minergie’ standards and uses a geothermal heat and cooling pump connected to four 80 meter holes drilled into the ground possible by the smallest mobile drill in Europe.
