    Description

The competition required a mixed-use development in the town centre of Biasca located in the valley of Leventina. The competition brief called for a large parking and bunker facilities below ground, commercials spaces on the ground and first level plus four levels of residential apartments all on 2300 square meter property. A proposal by VOLPATOHATZ re-defines and extends the main piazza for Biasca to the north of the property by incorporating the option of demolishing an adjoining building. The proposed L-shaped plan opens towards the southwest of the property thus forming a piazza accessible to the public via a large opening along the northern façade. The bands along the piazza are composed of stone flooring, benches, paths and soft landscape, reflect the ‘orto’ or vegetable patches of the surrounding country side. The commercial spaces on the ground floor accommodate a bank whilst residential apartments with balconies are located along the eastern wing in a horizontal format. Three residential townhouses with courtyards and studios on the ground level are located towards the northern wing. The varied heights to all window openings display a rhythmic language to the facade framing different views of the mountains beyond whether one is sitting or standing from their apartment or townhouse.
